Illinois State Professor of Ethnomusicology Ama Oforiwaa Aduonum will give a presentation about her new book, Walking With Asafo in Ghana: An Ethnographic Account of Kormantse Bentsir Warrior Music, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, in the Speaker’s Corner on Floor 2 of Milner Library. A Q&A, a reception, and a book signing will follow the presentation.
Aduonum, a nationally recognized playwright and author who also serves as the director of the ISU African Music and Dance Ensemble, will discuss her process of walking as a methodology in investigating the music of Asafo, a warrior tradition of Ghana. Aduonum will also discuss the connections between her creative and scholarly writing and how these frameworks decenter white racial framing of research, analysis, and presentation. Aduonum’s book is available in print and electronically through Milner Library. Production of the book was partially sponsored by the Illinois State University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the School of Music.
The event—and following reception are open to the public—all are welcome.
