At 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 22, FLAME will host a speaker from Planned Parenthood’s Community Engagement and Education team in Stevenson 101. ISU students, faculty/staff, and the general public are welcome. Pizza will be provided. This event is titled “The Current State of Reproductive Health”, and will focus on where to find reproductive resources, as well as the changes that have occurred across the country after the overturning of the historic Roe v. Wade.
In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that individuals have a constitutional right to privacy, including the choice to continue or end a pregnancy. The ruling of Roe v. Wade held strong for 49 years until the Supreme Court overturned it in June of 2022. Since then, states have enacted near-total abortion bans, with several others severely restricting or planning to restrict access to critical reproductive healthcare.
In January of this year, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed HB4664 into law, effectively expanding reproductive healthcare across the state and protecting Illinois healthcare providers (and their patients) from legal attacks launched by neighboring states. Illinois thus remains a safe haven for those who lack access to reproductive care in their home states.
Please join Feminist Led Activist Movement to Empower (FLAME) and Planned Parenthood this Wednesday to learn more about local resources and where we can go from here.
