As we approach the halfway point of the spring semester, many students are beginning to make plans for next semester. For some, that means beginning the search for scholarships and alternative funding to help cover academic costs. University Housing Services offers several options for financial assistance through both internal and external scholarship opportunities. One of the scholarships offered through housing is the Manchester Scholarship, a scholarship open to students living in Manchester Hall who display both strong academic performance and involvement at the University.
“Scholarships like these give me more reason to do my best and succeed,” said sophomore mathematics and computer science student Olivia Melosci, who is also a recent recipient of the Manchester Scholarship award. Coming from Edwardsville Illinois, Melosci recounts her story of finding a supportive community while living on the Honors-Themed Living Learning Community Floor in Manchester Hall. “We share a common motive, if we need help, we can reach out to each other. It has helped me stay focused,” said Melosci. Melosci is a Business Liaison for the Student Alumni Council and an active member of both the Women in Technology club and the ITSA (Information Students of America) club.
Melosci first encountered the Manchester Scholarship when browsing the Illinois State website for scholarship opportunities. Having had previous positive experiences with University Housing Services, Melosci was motivated to apply for the award. “I’m very happy with my living arrangements,” said Melosci.
Melosci remembers being in the Milner Library studying when she received a phone call notifying her that she had been awarded the scholarship. “When I answered I was surprised I got the scholarship! But I was so excited I immediately called my family,” said Melosci.
“Be in involved, have goals set for your future, and see what you can do to give back,” Melosci shares while reflecting on her journey with the scholarship application process.
University Housing Services offers several awards for outstanding resident assistants, Housing graduate assistants, and student leaders. These awards are made possible by generous gifts from supporters and are always greatly appreciated. This support helps University Housing to continue to provide a quality housing experience for students.
