The Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CESL) will take part in the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, by sponsoring a volunteer event on September 16. The center will hold a “Live-in for Service” event, working with organizations that have established live-in communities, including Marcfirst and McLean County Nursing Home.

“This day of service designation is a way to promote that community building and giving-back all across the country,” said Illinois State graduate student Paige Buschman, who works with community service projects for the CESL. Buschman noted the outpouring of giving and volunteerism after the September 11 attacks became a lasting and positive legacy of the tragedy. “Rather than foster feelings of anger, sadness, or fear when reflecting on 9/11, a goal of this project is to promote a sense of optimism and highlight agency. We can make a difference in our communities if we work together toward a goal.”
The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance celebrates the inspiring tradition of engaging in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.
