Connect your course with the wider world and help your students embrace ideals of civic responsibility, service, and critical thinking. Faculty members are invited to submit a proposal to join the Summer 2018 [Re]Design your Course for Civic Engagement cohort, sponsored by the American Democracy Project and the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT). The deadline is March 30, 2018. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a $1,000 stipend.
Civic engagement is one of the core values outlined in Illinois State’s strategic plan. The course design cohort offers faculty the support of colleagues, CTLT staff, and faculty and staff from various campus civic engagement initiatives as we work to broaden Illinois State’s commitment to the values of citizenship and institutionalization of civic engagement across the curriculum. We seek to include a variety of courses from all disciplines and programs.
Faculty selected to participate in this cohort will spend four days working to integrate civic engagement into a course they have taught and will teach again in the near future. The redesign process will allow faculty to explore ways to promote active learning experiences and assessment through which students can gain an awareness and understanding of civic engagement as a lifelong responsibility.
This redesign opportunity can also be used to develop a course that could be included in the interdisciplinary collection of available civic engagement minor electives, further broadening Illinois State’s commitment to the values of citizenship and institutionalization of civic engagement across the curriculum.
