A free showing of the PBS documentary The Island President will be at 7 p.m. Monday, September 24, at the Normal Theater.
The screening, co-hosted by Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CESL) and the American Democracy Project, is open to the public. It will be followed by a short talk by Michael Brown of the Ecology Action Center.
“The series offers civic films each semester as an accessible way for students to gain civic knowledge,” said Harriett Steinbach, assistant director of service learning at CESL. “The Island President was selected this semester as a result of our collaboration with PBS. Students will explore two key concepts through the film, democracy and climate change.”
Brown will discuss the findings from a recent inventory of local greenhouse gas emissions, why local emissions are increasing, and how people can reduce their impact.“We are thrilled that Michael will follow the viewing with information about local greenhouse gas emissions,” Steinbach said. “Together, the film and the presentation will help students explore climate change on both a global and local stage.”
