The Illinois State University School of Theatre and Dance presents The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Simon Stephens. The show runs October 26, 27, 30, 31, and November 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. and October 28 and November 3 at 2 p.m. in the Center for the Performing Arts Theatre on the university campus.

The New York Times called this play “one of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway.” The winner of five Tony Awards (including Best Play), six Drama Desk Awards, and a record-breaking seven 2013 Olivier Awards—more than any other play in the history of London’s West End, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is Simon Stephens’ adaptation of the best-selling book by Mark Haddon.
The story follows 15-year-old Christopher as he sets out to uncover who murdered his neighbor’s dog, Wellington. Christopher knows every prime number up to 7,057, but is ill-equipped to deal with the sounds and interactions of life outside of his home. His detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that turns his whole world upside down.
“I fell in love with Mark Haddon’s book when I was a teenager,” says Director Kristin L. Schoenback. “While never officially diagnosed, we see Christopher’s behaviors as different than our own—which is something we are forced to grapple with. With this play, we get the unique opportunity to experience Christopher’s journey through his eyes, so that we can empathize with his circumstances and find ways to bridge the gap between people who may be different from us. Christopher’s story is one not unlike yours or mine, he just tells it a bit differently.”

This production will have two unique performances during Illinois State’s Family Weekend. There will be a talk-back after the 7:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, October 27. The 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, October 28, will be a sensory friendly performance, designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to families with children with autism or other sensory sensitivities.
