Illinois State University has a long history of collaborating with the Central Illinois Institute of Balance (CIIB). This partnership allows Illinois State students to gain exposure to vestibular evaluation, for balance disorders, while remaining on campus.
Balance issues affect 60 percent of adults over the age of 65 and are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of these patients are part of a complex process; it requires collaboration among several specialties to determine the best treatment for each patient served.
Recently, CIIB has acquired more space, effectively doubling the square footage and allowing for more services to be offered. CIIB already offers physical therapy series for balance, vestibular rehabilitation, women’s health, orthopedic rehabilitation, therapeutic message, pain management, and much more. Audiologic services that Illinois State graduate students perform are videonystagmography testing, vestibular evoked myogenic potential, and comprehensive hearing evaluations. This allows CIIB to obtain a holistic picture of the inner ear function.
CIIB services are unique resources for Central Illinois. Most major insurance groups are accepted, and appointments for all services can currently be scheduled. Monthly workshops are now being offered. The May workshop offers hearing/balance screenings.
