The Peace Corps seeks applicants to fill hundreds of requests for volunteers in programs worldwide to begin service in spring and summer 2020. On September 17, Peace Corps recruiters will hold more than 70 application workshops nationwide as part of the agency’s largest recruitment drive in recent memory. The workshop at Illinois State University will take place in Career Center. Students interested in applying to serve after graduation will have an opportunity to ask questions about service, learn which programs best match their skills, and gain valuable tips to guide them through the application process.
The workshop will be held in room 110P of the Career Center, Student Services Building, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The center is located at 185 Student Services Building, Normal, Illinois 61790. The event will further attendees’ understanding of the application process and will describe the Peace Corps volunteer experience through the recruiter’s own experiences.
There are 13 Illinois State University alumni currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, and more than 555 alumni have served since Peace Corps was founded in 1961.
Peace Corps volunteers live and work for 27-month terms of service in more than 60 nations, and receive a living stipend, extensive language and technical training, and financial benefits including eligibility for student loan forgiveness and graduate school fellowships after service. Open positions with an October 1 application deadline are available in the fields of education, health, agriculture, community economic development, youth in development, and the environment. Applicants have the option of choosing to serve where the need for their skills is greatest, or applying directly to open programs in specific countries and regions. Accepted applicants live with host families and receive three months of training before being assigned to a community in their country of service.
