Every month the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State community to connect. This month readers can get to know Katie Pratt, University College communication specialist.
As communication specialist for University College, what are your responsibilities?
In this role, my primary duties include working with the various units within University College to promote services, programs and information via social media, web, and printed materials to current and perspective students, faculty and staff.
How long have you been an employee at Illinois State?
About seven years.
What do you love most about working at Illinois State?
I enjoy the additional opportunities available to work alongside colleagues in a number of ways such as being part of the Political Engagement Project, the Association of Black Academic Employees and as a Student Affairs Alumni Ambassador.
When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?
I am more than likely volunteering with a community organization, traveling to Chicago, or simply indulging in a weekend TV show binge.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
Redbird Plaza. It’s the best place to hang out when you need a little break during the day. And from the third floor of Fell, Redbird Plaza is great for people-watching during lunch.
What is one thing people would not know about you?
I’m a knitter and have been for about eight years. It’s a really fun hobby, and it’s great to break any myths that this is an “old lady hobby.” Shout out to Debbie Brown from orientation services for teaching me!
What quote most inspires you? Why?
My aunt shared this quote with me by Khalil Gibran a few years ago; she said my community engagement reminds her of this.
“I slept, and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke, and I saw that life is all service. I served, and I saw that service is joy.”
