The Illinois State University Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts and School of Music will host the third Wind Symphony concert of the 2019–2020 season at 8 p.m. Thursday, November 21, in the Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for Illinois State faculty/staff, and $6 for students (with student ID) and seniors.

The concert will open with Kevin Day’s Havana, a piece heavily influence by Cuban music, rhythms, and percussion.

Michael Daugherty’s Songs from a Silent Land for soprano and chamber winds is inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Christina Rossetti. The cycle is comprised of three songs, reflecting on this world and the possibility of a next world and was commissioned by a collection of university band programs, including Illinois State University. The performance on November 21 is an exclusive consortium premiere and will feature Illinois State University Professor of Voice Lily Thompson.

Following a brief intermission, the second part of the concert will open with Pulitzer Prize and two-time Grammy-winner Jennifer Higdon’s Mysterium, her own arrangement of her sacred choral work O Magnum Mysterium for wind ensemble.

Inspired by the early twentieth century works of Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer, and the Neoclassical music of Igor Stravinsky, Paul Dooley’s Masks and Machines will complete the concert.

The Wind Symphony is the University’s premier wind band and features the finest wind and percussion musicians on campus.
