Brenton Kane, Amanda Papinchock, and Troy Hinkle will be honored with Illinois State University Academic Advising Awards at a ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday, February 7, at the Alumni Center, room 118.
Herb Sanders Award for Outstanding Academic Advisement
Brenton Kane of the College of Business will receive the Herb Sanders Award for Outstanding Academic Advisement. Kane earned undergraduate and master’s degrees at Illinois State. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education administration within the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations. Kane started his career in University College as the pre-professional academic advisor in 2013, where he assisted students as they prepared for a career in the medical field. He joined the College of Business (COB) Academic Advisement Center in 2015, where he advises approximately 500 accounting undergraduate and graduate majors. An Impact Award recipient in 2015 and 2018, as well as the COB Administrative Professional Staff Outstanding Service recipient in 2017-2018, he has committed his career to advocating for students as they transition through their academic career.
Kane currently serves as chair to the Academic Advising Council (AAC), an elected position that works with the associate vice president for undergraduate education to support effective and cohesive campus-wide advising by formulating and maintaining advising systems and procedures. He also serves as chair to the Mentoring and Connections AAC subcommittee, focusing on mentoring and connecting new advisors to resources across campus. Kane currently teaches BUS 100 Introduction to Enterprise and created a new transfer seminar in fall 2019 aimed at retaining newly admitted accounting transfer students by providing additional support during their first semester on campus.
Outstanding New Undergraduate Advisor Award
Amanda Papinchock of University College will receive the Outstanding New Undergraduate Advisor Award. Papinchock is a proud alumna of Illinois State, and began her academic career at ISU as a transfer student by completing both a bachelor’s degree in community public health education in 2013 and a master’s degree in college student personnel administration in 2015. After graduation, Papinchock continued her “Redbird for Life” professional career path in the Health Promotion and Wellness Office as the coordinator for violence prevention and peer education. Papinchock moved to University College, serving first-year students, transfer students, and the veteran and military-connected student population. In addition to her academic advisor responsibilities, Papinchock taught the first-year seminar course IDS 128 – Thriving in College, Career and Beyond (THRIVE).
Jonathan Rosenthal Academic Advising Advocate Award
Troy Hinkel of the Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center will receive the Jonathan Rosenthal Academic Advising Advocate Award. Hinkel serves as the associate director of the Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center and graduate education licensure officer. Hinkel earned his bachelor’s degree in social science and business education and his master’s degree in educational administration from Eastern Illinois University. He began his professional career as a high school teacher and coach in Marshall, Illinois, before relocating to school districts in the Urbana/Danville area. There, he transitioned from teaching to school administration as an athletic director, vice principal, and principal. In these roles, he managed school discipline, athletics, budgets, and supervision of staff, while also participating in district-wide efforts focused on improvement initiatives.
Since joining the Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center in 2015, Hinkel has focused on assisting undergraduate and graduate education programs across campus. Through the center, Hinkel works with teacher education advisors, program coordinators, supervisors, and faculty members. He answers licensure questions for enrolled students, prospective students, and alumni. Hinkle also works with the Illinois State Board of Education to understand rules and impact on ISU programs, and assists with ISBE, Federal Title II and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) reporting.
