The Association for Women in Communication (AWC)-Illinois State Chapter provides students with opportunities to gain professional skills and attend networking events. This registered student organization (RSO) has over 30 members with all genders and majors welcome. Meetings are held weekly with each one focusing on professional development and are usually accompanied by guest speakers.
AWC holds events throughout the year to help apply the skills learned both in AWC and the classroom. One event that happens is the blood drive that takes place around mid-October where members are encouraged to volunteer and recruit people. AWC also partners with the Student Alumni Council to host a student-alumni working event called “MockTails: A Networking Event” during COM Week.
“What I think is so special about this group is that students can really get to know the communication field, how to prepare for it, and get important questions asked all while making amazing connections for future job contacts,” AWC advisor Stephanie Duquenne said. “We have a lot of fun, too!”
AWC recently attended an event that takes place every February called the Crystal Awards. This event honors local women within the communication field, and a $500 scholarship is awarded to one student.
