Nominations are now being accepted for the Grabill-Homan Community Peace Award. The award recognizes an individual in Bloomington-Normal for his or her achievements in peacemaking, leadership, initiative, activism, and inspiration within the community. The award will be presented to this year’s honoree in a ceremony at Illinois State University on March 22.
The recipient of the Grabill-Homan Community Peace Award will receive a plaque in recognition of his or her contributions to the community. A community-based organization designated by the award winner will also receive a $500 donation through the Grabill-Homan endowment at Illinois State. The award is named for Joseph L. Grabill and Gerlof D. Homan, Illinois State emeritus professors of history, who helped to establish the University’s interdisciplinary Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies Program.
Nominees must be residents of Normal or Bloomington and be 21 years of age or older. They must have a demonstrated involvement with community peacemaking activities, such as dedicating significant time and effort to activities that foster human dignity, peaceful conflict resolution, civil rights, cross-cultural understanding and tolerance, public health, child welfare, economic justice, education, environmental protection, and other social justice issues. Peacemaking activities may be demonstrated in a variety of arenas, such as the workplace, volunteer service or family life. The community impacted by the nominee may be at the local, regional, national or international level.
Nomination materials should include a brief resume that highlights peace-related activism, a letter of support that speaks to contributions made by the nominee, and a brief 300-500 word description of a specific need in the community with a peace and conflict dimension that warrants further public attention. Self-nominations are accepted.
