Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz has coauthored an essay on the 50th anniversary of the independence of Bangladesh in The Diplomat magazine. The essay titled “Bangladesh at 50: The Transformation of a Nation” explores the country’s journey since its independence in 1971. In the essay, coauthored by Saimum Parvez, authors argue that as the country in its golden jubilee stands at a crossroads regarding its governance.
The essay examines the growing geopolitical importance of the country, socio-economic progress, the state of democracy and the role of religion in politics. The essay argues that in recent years Bangladesh has achieved a greater significance due to its geopolitical significance, and made significant economic progress, but these positive developments are marred by the ongoing democratic backsliding.
