Every month the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State community to connect. This month readers can get to know Elizabeth Chupp, director of advisement for the School of Communication.
What are your responsibilities in this role?
I advise mass media majors/minors, manage enrollment and course scheduling, facilitate recruitment and retention efforts, teach communication courses, and more!
How long have you been an employee at ISU?
I’ve worked at ISU since 2011, but prior to my employment, I was an ISU student. I earned my bachelor’s degree in 2005 and master’s degree in 2009 from ISU, both in communication.
What do you love most about working at ISU?
The people. I’ve always felt a sense of community while working at ISU. I’m surrounded by passionate people who care about ISU and its success. We consistently come together to solve problems and make ISU a great place to work.
What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?
In my previous life, I was heavily involved in music and theater. I play two instruments (the piano and violin), I’m a vocalist (soprano), and I’ve participated in numerous musical theater productions. I still participate in the Civic Chorale at ISU when I’m able, and I love attending live theater events.
When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?
Spending time with my family – my spouse, Matt (also a Redbird alum!), and my 7-year-old twin boys. Recently, we’ve been spending a lot of time playing board games, watching movies and going on family walks. I also enjoy scrapbooking and reading in my (limited) free time.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
I’ve always loved the Quad. I remember walking across the Quad as a prospective student and feeling at home. It’s one of the reasons why I chose to attend ISU as a student, and it’s held a special place in my heart ever since.
What quote most inspires you? Why?
“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou
This quote reminds me that kindness goes a long way, and I try to be mindful of that as I interact with others.
