Young adults today are known for their technical savvy and entrepreneurial spirit. But this generation brings much more than their digital mindset and ambition to the workforce. Generation Z can also be described as individuals who are passionate for community activism, unafraid to challenge the status quo, and for being an ever-increasingly diverse population. In fact, this generation’s desire to impact social, environmental, and global issues has led many to consider working in industries such as social services, government and law, regardless of their actual major.
“The nonprofit sector is the third largest workforce in the nation and continues to grow,” according to career advisor Mariaton Tate. “The opportunities to work in nonprofit include much more than just direct service positions, such as social workers and other human service professionals. Students interested in work in human resources, marketing, communications, IT, and many other fields can find fulfilling careers in the nonprofit sector.”
To help students navigate their career interest, Career Services is hosting a panel discussion with alumni in nonprofit, social services, government and law. Held virtually on April 15 from 4-5 p.m., during Careers in Nonprofit, Social Services, Government and Law Panel Discussion with Alumni, students will participate in casual conversations with professionals from those industries to explore how they are making an impact on their communities, learn about how they navigated their careers, and identify career paths that they may not have originally considered.

- Daniel Moore ’15, geography, government industry
- Kellian Reef ’15, public relations, nonprofit industry
- Deja Whitt ’18, public relations, nonprofit industry
“Working in a nonprofit setting can provide students with invaluable transferable skills that they can utilize in other settings throughout their career,” Tate said. “For example, those interested in utilizing their digital technology skills, such as social media, can use them to further the mission of nonprofits.”
Students interested in exploring the nonprofit sector are encouraged to attend the alumni panel or to make an appointment with Tate to explore career possibilities.
