The Fall International Seminar Series, A New Normal in a Global Context, continues with a feature presentation by Dr. Cara Wong on “National Identity and Racism in an Era of COVID-19: The Case of Asians and Asian Americans.” This seminar is a joint presentation with the Hibbert Roberts Lecture series and will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 as a zoom webinar. Wong is an associate professor and associate head for undergraduate programs in the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Boundaries of Obligation in American Politics: Geographic, National, and Racial Communities (2010, Cambridge University Press), and her work has been published in numerous academic journals, including Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, and Public Opinion Quarterly. She has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University; a fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation; a Fulbright Scholar at the Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile; and a University of Manchester Hallsworth visiting professor. Wong is past president of the political psychology section of the American Political Science Association.
The international seminar is offered as a collaboration between the Illinois State University Office of International Studies and Programs and the Department of Politics and Government. The faculty coordinator for the series is Dr. TY Wang, professor and department chair of Politics and Government. Wang says “As hate crimes against Asian-Americans have risen during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wong’s presentation will help us to understand the complex issues involved in the U.S.”
The International Seminar Series has become one of the most popular internationally focused events on ISU’s campus and continues to provide international perspectives on critical issues around the world. The seminar series continues through November 3. The full schedule can be found online.
