Everyone is encouraged to attend the free film screening of the politically focused documentary Battleground. The showing will be at the Normal Theatre on Wednesday, February 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Battleground is an intimate look at our current political divide, as seen through the eyes of two grassroots activists in the pivot counties of the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.
Tom Carroll is a delegate for Donald Trump and a Tea Party chairman, and Greg Edwards is a pastor and a progressive leader supported by Bernie Sanders. When their paths collide, viewers realize that they have much more in common than meets the eye.
The screening is hosted by the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and Milner Library. After the screening, the documentary will be available as a part of Milner’s catalog.
“Whether shown in the Normal Theater or streaming anytime anywhere through the library’s catalog, making resources with a holistic lens such as Battleground available is one way we strive to promote civic engagement and support student success at the University,” said Angela Bonnell, associate professor and head of government documents for Milner Library.
The film runs 56 minutes and will be followed by a brief presentation and Q&A session with an Illinois State faculty expert on the current political climate and polarization in America. This event is open to the public.
“Battleground offers a clear roadmap for how voters can navigate difficult political conversation,” said Joshua Crockett, graduate assistant in charge of civic education and political engagement at CCE. “Polarization has transformed the way we discuss politics with our family, friends, and fellow voters, and the story of Tom Carroll and Greg Edwards offers insight into how we can all overcome our differences.”
