The following message provides information about on-campus face coverings and Spring Break testing availability. For the most up-to-date information about the University’s approach to COVID-19, visit the Coronavirus website or email Coronavirus.illinoisstate.edu

The last Coronavirus Update indicated that, effective Monday, February 28, face coverings would become optional inside campus facilities, except for during classes and in laboratories, within clinical settings, and in federally required settings including public transportation. This past week saw a few developments which further refine the University’s plans. The CDC issued updated guidance for masking; the Governor issued Executive Order 2022-06 reinforcing the CDC’s updated mask guidance, and also lifted masking requirements in K-12 schools.

The updated State and CDC face covering guidance is now based on hospitalization data and our area is showing significant improvements, a true testament to everyone’s commitment to following healthcare guidance during these most recent surges.

Therefore, effective Monday, March 21, face coverings will be recommended, but not required within all University facilities except for:

  • Clinical settings, including Student Health Services, Student Counseling Services, COVID-19 testing sites, and other sites listed on the Coronavirus website under Face Coverings.
  • University events when required by contract with speakers, performers, etc.
  • Public transportation (including Connect Transit buses) and in other federally mandated sites

As a courtesy, please wear a face covering in a private office or residence hall room upon the occupant’s request. Starting March 21, please also wear a face covering in classrooms if requested by the instructor.  There is no change to the University’s COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements at this time.

KN95 masks remain available and have been shown to provide significantly greater protection to the wearer when compared to cloth masks or surgical masks. When properly worn, KN95 masks are tight fitting and offer virus filtering capacity of up to 95 percent for the person wearing the mask.  KN95 masks are available at locations in the residence halls, in the Bone Student Center, in the Multicultural Center and via Facilities Management for department needs.

During this transitional time in the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important that we support one another, regardless of individual choices that are made regarding face coverings. Individuals should feel comfortable wearing face coverings in university spaces as we move forward together as a Redbird community.
