New Redbird Sofia Troyer wants to travel the world to make it a better, more sustainable place and chose Illinois State University to help make those dreams a reality.
The Delavan native is studying international business, which requires students to learn another language and travel abroad. Troyer chose to learn Japanese and wants to study either in Japan or Korea.
“I find learning about different cultures interesting,” Troyer said. A recipient of the Dunaway Family Dean’s Scholarship for first-generation students and the Redbird Academic Scholarship, Troyer wants to use their college experience as a base to either create a business of their own or contribute to another business’ efforts to become more eco-friendly. Troyer envisions a future where they can help others promote recycling and reduce waste, especially when it comes to items like clothing and furniture.
“I feel like there’s a lot of things that you can use and recycle, but I feel like I would do my best with clothing. I really like fashion,” Troyer said.
Troyer felt prepared to begin college, even though they admit missing their dog, Quinn.
“I only live 45 minutes away from the campus, but she’s just like my best friend, and I have a lot of pictures of her,” Troyer said. “She’s like my emotional support.”
Even though Troyer is separated from Quinn, they have a lot of support on campus. Troyer’s sister is a current Redbird, and Sofia has friends already at Illinois State. Even with those existing connections, Troyer wants to learn more about the registered student organizations (RSOs) on campus that fit nicely with their diverse set of interests.
Troyer is looking into joining LGBTQ+ organizations and wants to participate in the many volunteer opportunities available to Redbirds. Due in part to their love for Quinn, Troyer is an animal lover and wants to explore RSOs that specialize in conservation or helping animals in need.
“If there’s anything that involves volunteering at an animal shelter or something, I’d probably join it,” Troyer said.
Additionally, the Redbird Academic Scholarship recipient likes anime and playing video games, which makes them a natural fit for some of the anime and gaming RSOs on campus. Troyer also enjoys volleyball and plans to look into the different intramural leagues available through Campus Recreation.
Most of all, Troyer is ready to immerse themselves in their studies to get one step closer to creating the life they have dreamed of.
“I’m excited to get into my major, just hammering down on that and getting to study abroad and learn Japanese,” they said.
