Student Counseling Services (SCS) is offering two new drop-in sessions: the online Let’s Talk, and the in-person Systemic Issues and Violence Impacting Mental Health and Well-Being.

Let’s Talk
Let’s Talk are free, informal, and confidential consultations conducted over Zoom with therapists from SCS. Sessions are open every Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. and Wednesdays from noon-1 p.m. throughout the semester. No appointments are necessary.

“Let’s Talk is for students who are not interested in therapy, but might need to talk through a specific problem for themselves or for a friend,” said SCS Associate Director of Diversity, Equity and Outreach Danielle Beasley. “Let’s Talk allows students to get the perspective of a counselor.” Beasley noted students might discuss problems such as stress, academic concerns, career questions, peer pressure, relational concerns, and anxiety.

Access the Let’s Talk Tuesday session from 1-2 p.m.

Access the Let’s Talk Wednesday session from noon-1 p.m.

Systemic Issues and Violence Impacting Mental Health and Well-Being
Systemic Issues and Violence Impacting Mental Health and Well-Being is a new, in-person, drop-in service to help process instances of systematic issues of violence or hatred.

This space is being held in consideration of ongoing instances of hatred and bias with recognition that these incidents weigh heavily on our bodies, minds, and hearts.

SCS Director Carrie Haubner

“Research has demonstrated that systemic violence has an impact on society as a whole, not just on those targeted,” said SCS Director Carrie Haubner. “This space is being held in consideration of ongoing instances of hatred and bias with recognition that these incidents weigh heavily on our bodies, minds, and hearts.”

Students in discussions will process reactions, be in a community, and learn information about campus and community resources that support social justice initiatives.

All sessions meet in the Student Services Building, room 130, from 11 a.m.-noon on the following dates for the Spring 2023 semester:

  • Monday, March 6
  • Monday, March 20
  • Monday, April 3
  • Monday April 24

No appointment is necessary. The drop-in sessions are available to all Illinois State students. Find more information on the SCS website.

Note: For students who believe they are experiencing life-threatening circumstances and current or recent traumatic crises, SCS offers day-to-day crisis walk-in appointments. Students can go to the scheduling portal on the SCS website or call the SCS main office at (309) 438-3655. If no appointments are available, a new set of appointments will be available the following day.
