Special education majors are invited to attend interest sessions on the Washington, D.C., policy immersion trip scheduled for Wednesday, February 3, from 6–7 p.m. and Thursday, February 4, from 11 a.m.–noon in 551 DeGarmo Hall.
The five-day summer trip empowers aspiring educators to get involved in special education policy and become an advocate by meeting with national leaders in education. Students also have a sit-down with outstanding educational nonprofits and support their cause on Capitol Hill.
These interest meetings will feature past participants in the program who will share not only their firsthand account of the experience but also their new sense of purpose in lifting up the unheard voices of the country’s most vulnerable students.
Here is what some participants are saying about last year’s inaugural trip:
“I think it’s really hard to even pinpoint a favorite part. I mean every part was so empowering in its own way”
“So like it was interesting, I learned a lot. And that’s where I grew like so much more respect for our senators and congressmen and how much they have to do.”
“But also, whenever we went to American Federation for the Blind, I mean I had that kind of like ‘ah-ha’ moment where I’m like this is what I want to do, work with children who with vision impairments.”
Interested students who are unable to attend an interest meeting should contact Stacey Hardin for program details.
