Alternative Breaks (AB), a student organization supported by Leadership and Community Connections, provides students with opportunities to enact social change. Alternative Breaks hosts local, national, and global service trips to help meet the needs of communities. Recently, students participated in Alternative Winter Break where they traveled to serve in either Alabama or Guatemala.
Tori Niestrom, a freshman special education major, traveled to Alabama with other students this winter for her first Alternative Break trip: “Alternative Break was a life-changing experience. Not only did I make outstanding relationships with ISU students and staff, but it was rewarding to make a difference in someone else’s community.”

Bre Morgan, a senior anthropology major, also participated in Alternative Winter Break, but attended the international trip to Guatemala. Morgan is the student coordinator of Alternative Winter Break, and this was her fourth AB trip. Morgan loves the work done during the trips, as well as “learning and reflecting on social issues at the end of each day.” She recommended participating in an AB trip to any student at Illinois State.
If students missed the opportunity to participate in Alternative Winter Break, they still have a chance to apply for Alternative Spring Break. While there is currently a waiting list, Alternative Spring Break applications are still being accepted on a rolling basis.
