School of Kinesiology and Recreation Professor Rachel Smith will lead an exciting floating travel workshop in January. The cruise ship industry course will introduce students to one the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry and acquaint them with cruise ship operations.
The group will set sail from Florida on the Disney Fantasy, where they will get a unique behind-the-scenes look at how issues of safety, security, health, environmental management, accessibility and working with diverse populations are addressed on a cruise ship.
Students will also tour activity areas to learn first-hand how programs are prepared for youth from diverse cultural backgrounds within the confines of a cruise ship. Aspects of human resources and marketing, tourism, theater and dance, hospitality, conservation, and accessibility will also be covered during the course.
Cruise ships are floating international cities, and students meet cruisers and crew from all over the world. Ports of call include the islands of Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Castaway Cay, and Jamaica. Additionally students will explore Mayan ruins, swim with dolphins, and view stingrays in their natural habitat.
According to Cruise Lines International Association, demand for cruising has increased 68 percent in the last 10 years. With such a growing industry the School of Kinesiology and Recreation is well-positioned to offer this exciting study abroad opportunity in tourism.
