Jay D. Bergman, the longest-serving member of the Board of Trustees of Illinois State University, will leave the Board when his term expires January 16, 2017.
“I care about ISU and will continue to be involved, but I told the governor’s office that 14 years on the board is long enough” Bergman indicated. “It’s time to appoint someone new.”
A Joliet resident, Bergman joined the board in September 2003. During his tenure, the University completed the construction of the State Farm Hall of Business, the opening of the Student Fitness Center and Cardinal Court Apartments, and improvements to Hancock Stadium. Working with four University presidents, Bergman has witnessed three consecutive years of record enrollments, increased diversity on campus, and a growing civic engagement from students.
“We thank Jay D. for his dedication to Illinois State and his years of service to the Board of Trustees,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Rocky Donahue. “His is a spark that cannot easily be replaced.”
Governor Bruce Rauner will appoint a replacement for Bergman on the ISU board. However, Bergman will continue to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the Illinois Board of Higher Education for the foreseeable future.
Bergman received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Illinois State University in 1970. He serves as the president and CEO of Petco Petroleum Corporation, a nationwide energy company. He is also chairman of the Board of the First Secure bank group in the Chicago area. Bergman also serves on the American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois regional board, and is a member of the board of trustees of The Chicago Zoological Society/Brookfield Zoo.
“Trustee Bergman has served as a constant voice on the Board. His business acumen, support of shared governance, and straight-forward approach to University matters over the years is truly appreciated,” said University President Larry Dietz.
Bergman’s last meeting on the Board will be Friday, January 13.
