The Illinois State University School of Theatre and Dance will present the Spring Dance Concert, opening April 27. Performances will be held in Westhoff Theatre and will run through April 30.
The concert features the premiere of five new faculty works. Kaley Pruitt’s work, “Room for Elephants,” with music by the Tin Hat Trio opens the concert, followed by “Crest, Crush, Curl,” a new work by Kristin Carlson set to the music of Greg Corness. In the more classical realm is Greg Merriman’s “Four Years Later,” set to music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. “Bolster When Needed,” set to the music of Simone Morbidelli, is a work for five dancers by Artistic Director Darby Wilde that explores support systems through movement. Sara Semonis premieres a work for six dancers titled “Change of Role” set to the music by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber.
The concert will also feature a premiere by guest artist Stephanie Pizzo, co-artistic director of Eisenhower Dance. Pizzo spent six days as an artist-in-residence working with dance students to create the piece, “Room to Breathe,” to the music of Cyril Morin.
“Come experience the exhilaration of concert dance with the Illinois State Dance Theatre as they premier new faculty works,” Wilde said. “This concert includes classical and contemporary works that will be visually exciting and will leave you wanting more! Ms. Pizzo’s choreographic work for 14 dancers is athletic, tender, and visually exciting. It will leave you breathless.”
