The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences holds an annual awards ceremony to recognize students and faculty for their achievements. The department is very fortunate to have many scholarships to award students based on their academic achievements.
The department provided scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year to 41 deserving students, including the inaugural Margaret Ann Hayden Scholarship for a student majoring in fashion design and merchandising.
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences also recently selected its third recipient of the Freshman Recruitment and Retention scholarship. This scholarship is offered to an incoming freshman and can be renewed for three additional years if the recipient remains in good academic standing. We are grateful to our many friends who generously support the department with their gifts and allow us to offer so many scholarships to our accomplished students.
In addition to student scholarships, the department recognizes two faculty members for the achievements in teaching and research. This year, the Phyllis Memken Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Associate Professor Tammy Harpel, coordinator of the human development and family science program. The Outstanding Researcher award was presented to Yoon Jin Ma, associate professor and coordinator of the fashion design and merchandising program.
Every year, each program nominates a senior student who stands out among their peers based on their academic achievement, service to the department, university, extra-curricular activities, volunteerism and service to their community. This year’s top seniors were:
- Gina Rubino, fashion design and merchandising
- Taylor Prazma, FCS teacher education
- Tyler Townsend, food, nutrition and dietetics
- Brittany Mussen, human development and family science
- interior design: Scott Ramirez, interior design
Thanks to all the friends and family members who came out to support our students at this year’s ceremony! Thanks also to Kenzie Bigliazzi for the wonderful pictures of the event.
