Donor spotlight: Dr. Elizabeth Chapman
From a young age, donor and former Illinois State staff Dr. Elizabeth Chapman dreamed of becoming a teacher. Her parents were encouraging but made it clear that Chapman would have to find means beyond their support to finance her education. That’s when she began applying for the scholarships that made it possible for her to pursue a degree in education. When looking back on how these opportunities impacted her life, Chapman said, “I graduated from college with minimal debt. I couldn’t have done it if I had not had the scholarships I had.”
Therapeutic recreation alumni found love at Illinois State
Mia Leyba ’17 and Jordan Ross ’17, both therapeutic recreation alumni, married on October 29. Lebya and Ross were just classmates until falling in love at the very end of their last semester. Lebya shared that the pair actually met off-campus at a conference.

Smith and the School of Kinesiology and Recreation have launched a new mentoring initiative to help prepare Therapeutic Recreation (TR) students for important milestones in their senior year — internships and the national certification exam. After the first year of the program, both mentors and mentees report great experiences in the program.
