Much of the material created by the United States Government is not copyrighted, but many historical publications are only available in physical formats. Open access efforts are working to change that.
Most of the items uploaded to Illinois State University’s institutional repository are PDFs. But for those whose work is better showcased outside the boundaries of an article, ISU ReD has that covered, too.
Like any material, Open Access publications sometimes “disappear” from the web. Professional organizations dissolve and their conference web pages are taken down, publishers cease operations and their assets are sold or go into legal limbo, and individuals lose interest in maintaining websites and move on.
